Back High Impact Polystyrene
HIPS is a high-quality sheet material, produced for thermoforming and vacuum forming. It is used in outdoor advertising, refrigerator parts, plumbing fixtures, toys, food packaging, etc. It may have a glossy, matt, smooth, embossed or mirror finish of different colors. Sheets may also be co-extruded. This allows to bond two layers of different color and add a glossy coating.

Raw polystyrene is quite fragile, which makes it impossible to use for a lot of applications. That is why its production includes adding special agents that improve its impact strength and flexibility to obtain an impact resistant material. One of the types of PS is freon-resistant polystyrene that used in refrigeration equipment manufacturing. The surface has a matt finish on both sides, glossy finish on one side (the glossy coating is produced by co-extrusion with GPPS) or embossed finish. If needed, one side of the sheet undergoes corona discharge treatment, and the sheet is coated with a thermoformable film. The material may be UV-stabilized for outdoor use, which provides protection from yellowing, caused by UV light.
Polystyrene illuminating sheet is one of the types of High Impact Polystyrene, a substitute for acrylic used in production of light boxes. It differs from acrylic in that it has a glossy surface. Polystyrene illuminating sheet is popular because of its superior impact resistance to acrylic, easy machining, weather resistance and lower cost.
High Impact Polystyrene is also a less-cost option compared to acrylic because of its low density and superior impact resistance of less thick sheets (2—3 mm) to acrylic sheets (3—5 mm), which helps cut costs in half, at 1 sq. m of diffuser.
